🪃 Discover the Cultural Heritage of Minjerribah: Straddie’s Aboriginal History
Minjerribah, known to many as North Stradbroke Island, is more than just stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters—it's a land rich in Aboriginal history, culture, and spirit. Home to the Quandamooka people, the island carries thousands of years of stories, traditions, and deep connection to Country.
In this article, we invite you to explore the cultural roots of Minjerribah, understand its importance for the Quandamooka people, and learn how you can respectfully engage with this living heritage during your visit.
🌿 Who Are the Quandamooka People?
The Quandamooka People are the Traditional Owners of Minjerribah and the surrounding waters of Moreton Bay. Their name means "people of the bay", and their history on this land dates back over 20,000 years.
They belong to three distinct clans:
- Nunukul,
- Goenpul,
- and Ngugi.
These clans have passed down oral histories, sacred knowledge, and spiritual connections through countless generations. The land, sea, and sky are not just elements of nature—they’re deeply woven into cultural identity and lore.
🔥 A Living Culture: Stories, Songlines & Ceremony
Minjerribah holds sacred sites, songlines, and ancient camping grounds that still echo the dreaming stories of the Quandamooka people. Traditional practices like fire-stick farming, fishing with stone fish traps, and bark canoe building are part of the island’s living heritage.
Through art, dance, and ceremony, the Quandamooka people continue to celebrate and protect their cultural identity—and they generously share this with respectful visitors.
